This remote island measures around 25 km by 5 km and currently has a human population of about 50 people. Our homestead and M\u0101nuka oil distillery is in Otanerau Bay, a 30 kilometre sea journey from the nearest town and road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The land is a mixture of virgin native bush, regenerating native bush, farmland and forestry. The Eastern side of the island drops into Cook Strait and the terrain is usually steep and the weather often wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arapaoa Island was inhabited by M\u0101ori for many years before European settlement. The island was an important site for interaction between North and South Island M\u0101ori tribes and also was the site of some of the earliest European and M\u0101ori encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014 the island was renamed &#8220;Arapaoa Island&#8221; from &#8220;Arapawa Island&#8221;, to reflect its correct M\u0101ori pronunciation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"434\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/mshop.co.nz\/mwooshop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ArapawaMap.gif\" alt=\"Map of Arapaoa Island\" class=\"wp-image-10115\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arapaoa Island is the fifth largest island of mainland New Zealand and is located in the outer Queen Charlotte Sounds.
